For years now, we’ve been using ‘s keyword density tool. The reason why it’s our favorite is that not only it is easy-to-use and efficient, but most importantly, it analyzes the whole content of a web page.

That means that it will look at the main body of an article but also its tags, titles, and alt text. As an SEO professional, you know that those also contain keywords.

That is why we suggest that, for example, you don’t use WordPress plugins like Yoast. They will only analyze the main article and overlook the rest of the webpage, giving misleading results. The last thing you want is half the information you need.

How to Use a Keyword Density Tool

Using a keyword density tracker is very easy. Simply take the published page that you want to check and put it in the search field. Hit “Go” and the tool will analyze the entire page, showing you the numbers for one-word, two-words, three-words, and entire phrases that it determines to be keywords.

The most important thing to ask yourself is why you should check density. Years ago, SEO focused on including as many keywords as possible in online content. That is not the case anymore.

Google has developed immensely in the past few years, and it understands natural language patterns so much better now that it's really unnecessary to try to hit specific target keyword densities. If the content is written well, Google will understand what the content is about, even though you don’t repeat certain keywords over and over again.

You should actually watch out for the opposite and avoid over density, also known as keyword stuffing. You may even be penalized for overusing keywords.

What is the right density then?  Regardless of the tracker you decide to use, try to keep your density under a specific threshold. We found that to be 2% for one-word keywords. Try to stay under 1% for two-word keywords and under 0.2% for three-word keyword phrases instead.

Of course, everyone’s needs and targets are different, and we are not suggesting that you stick to our favorite tracker or density threshold. However, it is important to remember that less is more when it comes to keyword usage.
